Cosmetic preservatives. It is a phenolic preservative. It is effective against various molds, yeasts and bacteria, but the bactericidal power of paraben is low. It is usually mixed with ethyl paraben and has good addition and synergy. Adding amount is 0.1%~1.0%. The antiseptic activity is related to the pH value of the solution. When the pH value is 7, its activity is 2/3 of the original activity; if the pH value is 8.5, it is reduced to half of the original activity. It will be bound by some high-molecular compounds such as methyl cellulose, gelatin protein, etc. and make it lose its preservative activity.

In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used as an antiseptic and bactericide for medicaments, and also as a corrosion protection additive for organic synthesis and food, spices, and films. Similar products produced by similar production methods are ethyl paraben (paraben B) and propyl paraben (paraben C), which are also disinfectants and antiseptics.
